The Pupil Premium is allocated to schools for children of statutory school age who are eligible under the following criteria:

•  low-income families who are known to be eligible for Free school meals (FSM) in both mainstream and non-mainstream settings. From 2012-2013 this has also included pupils eligible for FSM at any point in the last six years (known as the Ever 6 FSM measure)

• children who have been looked after continuously for more than six months

• children whose parents are currently serving in the armed forces

Schools are free to spend the Pupil Premium as they see fit in order to ‘narrow the gap’ in children’s educational attainment. However we are held accountable for how we have used the additional funding to support pupils from low-income families. From September 2012 we are required to publish online information about how we have used the Premium. This will ensure that parents and others are made fully aware of the attainment of pupils covered by the Premium and the extra support that they receive.

CASE STUDIES

Child A has Free School Meals. He is on the SEN Code of Practice at School Action because of difficulties with literacy. He receives small group support to improve his spelling and his reading. He is also supported in class with his written work. He is making good progress in both reading and writing. He is currently experiencing difficulties at home with his family situation and this has an impact on his social interactions with other children and his ability to focus and learn in the classroom. To help him with this he attends weekly sessions with Learning Space. He uses these sessions well to talk about his wishes and feelings, with the aim of building his sense of self-worth and confidence. Learning Space also offers support for his family, providing an opportunity to talk openly about the situation and how it might be affecting Child A.

Child B has Free School Meals. She is making good progress in all areas of the curriculum and does not require support with her learning. Her family situation has changed dramatically over the past few weeks and she has experienced difficulties adapting to these changes. This has led to some problems with her attendance and has impacted on her social interactions with her peers. Learning Space is working with her to support her through these changes and is also meeting with her parents to talk about ways to help her. The Home-School Link Worker team are working with the family, providing support when Child B is reluctant to come into school in the morning.

Child C has Free School Meals. He is on the SEN Code of Practice at School Action Plus for difficulties with learning in both Literacy and Maths. He attends a Phonics intervention group three times a week and has regular support with reading. He receives weekly support for speech, language and communication skills, working in a small group. In class he is supported one to one or in a small group in both Literacy and Maths sessions. His progress continues to be slow, despite the high level of support he receives, and his class teacher and the SENCo meet regularly with his family to review
